<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I met for the first time with the new (as of March) Columbia
Executive Vice President for Communications - David Stone - on
Tuesday. This was a very useful and constructive meeting - the first
of several I believe that will be necessary over the coming year as
we work to manage Lamont's image in the popular press and achieve the
right kinds of public exposure for our work.

Speaking of the popular press, keep an eye out in next week's issue
of the New Yorker for a Talk of the Town piece featuring Beate
Liepert's aerosol studies. I shall be anxiously awaiting its
publication in order to count the number of times "Lamont" appears in
print! But seriously, congratulations again to Beate.

The last in this season's series of Mentoring Panels was this
afternoon - I have been encouraged by how well attended they have
been - so we will certainly repeat this activity next year. Thank you
to all the Panelists - your participation is greatly appreciated.
This last session was on the thorny issue of 'Principal Investigator
Responsibilities' - a topic upon which we can all benefit from
receiving a refresher course. The passion for increased
accountability for use of federal funds continues unabated.
Occasionally this brings a spotlight onto research spending on
esoteric topics in academia. We have to be absolutely sure that our
business practices are without blemish. And, much to some peoples
surprise, Principal Investigators play an important role in this
chain of responsibility!
