<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

At the heart of our business of academic research is the important process of publishing in top-ranked

peer-reviewed journals. This is a vitally important quality-control process without which the credibility

of what we do would be zero. The process of reviewing articles for journals takes a lot of effort and

time and produces little or no reward. But it is an activity that is critically important to the health of our

profession. Therefore it was with particular pride that I read in the latest issue of the American

Geophysical Union's weekly newspaper Eos that two Lamonters are being recognized by AGU and

receiving the 2005 Editors Citation for Excellence in refereeing. Stan Jacobs and Alexey Kaplan - on

behalf of all in the community - thank you.

Of course the groundbreaking ceremony for the Geochemistry Building on Wednesday was the highlight

of the week. There are pictures and a write up on our web page, so I will not be repetitive here. Needless

to say, it was a wonderful afternoon, and proved to be a true 'ground breaking' - the real site excavation

began on Thursday immediately after the tent was removed. We found a copy of the official program for the

opening of the existing Geochem Building - the ceremony was on Friday October 15th from 6 til 1030pm in

the year 1954. It must have been a great party! I am having the document scanned in and we will get it up on

our web page

The joy of Wednesday was tainted by the sad news that J. Laurence Kulp, the founder of Geochemistry at

Lamont, died in a tragic accident a couple of days previously - we had expected him to attend the ground

breaking - he had accepted our invitation. There is a write-up on Professor Kulp on our Alumni web page

Today CU announced its new fund raising campaign - the target is $4B - the largest ever announced by a

University. So there have been a host of events downtown the last couple of days, including an enjoyable

dinner at the President's house last night, and today Mark Cane and I spent most of the day entertaining

potential donors with exciting tales of significant Lamont research.

Another busy week coming up - a second trip to Boston for shipyard negotiations, a NOAA external review

of our Cooperative Institute on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by ExCom, an Advisory Board Meeting,

a dinner for our Torrey Cliff Society, and all topped off with our Annual Open Day on Saturday.

Have a great weekend,

- Mike

PS Monday, October 2 - 1:20 to 2:00 Lamont's Roger Buck on the Leonard Lopate Show on WNYC radio FM 93.9 AM 820
