<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Three days in Washington essentially consumed this week. Meetings of
the CORE Board of Governors and of the JOI Board of Governors, and
then both Boards together - much discussion. Ex WHOI Director Bob
Gagosian is playing a key leadership role in orchestrating the merger
of JOI and CORE into a single DC entity to support Ocean Sciences.
Julie Morris, the head of Ocean Sciences at NSF sat in on the JOI BOG
meeting - a good sign that the close partnership that used to exist
between NSF and JOI is being rebuilt. The most difficult discussions
were about the funding for the Ocean Observations Initiative and for
the refitting of the JOIDES Resolution for the new Drilling Program.
Both projects have budgets that are causing tough reviews of scope
and ambition.

I met the new Director of Scripps for the first time - Tony Haymet
from CSIRO in Australia. I hope he will visit Lamont in the not too
distant future.

Friday back here at Lamont slipped by in a flash with the monthly
ExCom followed by the annual meeting with the graduate students (at
which I was nailed to the wall by angry reactions to the new parking
policy). And in between I met with the great Kerry Emmanuel from MIT,
Joerg Pross from Frankfurt and Terry Plank from BU.

I think we get an extra hour's sleep this weekend, which will be
greatly appreciated.
