<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR<>

I had evening events three out of five nights this week, so the week
has gone quickly.

We hosted a spectacular group of students and teachers from three
New York City schools on Wednesday evening to recognize their
participation in field work programs over the past couple of summers
that Bob Newton in Geochemistry had enabled. This was simply a very
happy and positive event - young folks, unburdened by the cynicism
that grows with the years, are a great antidote to many of the
depressing realities associated with managing an institution like
this on a day-to-day basis.

Thursday and Friday we entertained a senior representative of BP
(which I am told no longer stands for British Petroleum) who knows
more about carbon sequestration activities in the commercial world
than anyone I have ever spoken to. These were a very interesting and
wide ranging discussions involving many of our staff, that I hope
will prove fruitful in the long term.

Several different entities within Columbia (including our own
ADVANCE program) organized a day long 'Science of Diversity'
Conference downtown all day today (Friday). Because of other
appointments I could only make it to two of the sessions through the
day, but it was extremely worthwhile and attracted a notably high
level audience.

Rockland County Economic Development Council decided to give an award
to Lamont - the ceremony was today at lunch time and our CFO Edie
Miller accepted the award on our behalf. It is an important and
pleasing thing to be recognized by our local community.

We are finished blasting for the new building. We will continue
excavating for the basement through the second week of December, and
we should be pouring concrete in the first week of December through
the middle of January for footings and walls.

Past experience suggests that late next week some divine power will
push the fast forward button and it will be January - but make sure
you have a wonderful Thanksgiving before it happens. And if you are
traveling, be sure to be safe.

Have a great weekend,

Mike
