<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

We ran a very successful holiday reception last Sunday afternoon for our local friends and neighbors - over 60 of our good friends attended - thank you to all the attending Lamonters who helped make this successful.

John Bolton was on the same shuttle as I was on Monday evening returning from DC, surrounded as these folks always are, by short-haired, steely-eyed young men with wires in their ears. It was not till I got home that I learned he was returning from presenting his resignation to George W. He didn't look happy. . .

I spent half the day in DC at NSF and did not hear a hit of the announcement that was released in the afternoon about Margaret Leinen's planned departure from NSF in January. Margaret as Assistant Director for Geosciences was a powerful advocate for us within NSF - her rapid departure will leave an important vacuum at a particularly complex time as the power shifts on Capitol Hill. Overall very much not good.

As we all prepare to migrate west to San Francisco for AGU next week, and try to figure out how to be in several places at once - a necessary talent given the degree of overlap of important sessions, do not forget the Lamont Alumni Party at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Tuesday evening at 6:30PM, and more importantly the special session on Global Tectonics in tribute to Bill Haxby on Friday morning and afternoon.

We are always looking for new ways to bring the Lamont name to a broader general public, and thanks to the annually adroit antics of our own Marc Spiegelman we have broken into the hallowed halls of 'Youtube"! Go to youtube.com and search for bathtub science, and you will see what I mean.

Have a great weekend,

- Mike
