<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

The first full week of the New Year comes to an end as the Geochem
building construction continues apace - the good weather means we are
doing well schedule-wise, and despite constant and never-ending
worries we seem to be surviving budget-wise as well. Thanks to Bob
Bookbinder we have a web cam setup monitoring the construction - you
can find the images and a very basic time lapse movie at the
following url:

We have reached a critical and long-waited-for stage with the
Langseth project - our other major capital effort. We are in the
final moments of accepting delivery of the vessel from the shipyard,
and after a couple of weeks of crew training she will sail directly
to Galveston, Texas to commence science outfitting, prior to
shakedown and calibration activities in the Gulf of Mexico.

Several of us attended the reception down town on Thursday evening to
wish Barbara Noseworthy well as she leaves her position (at the end
of this month) as head of Development for the Earth Institute - we
shall miss Barbara - she has done a lot to help Lamont over the past
few years, and we all wish her well in the future.

Next week I am 'retreating' to Miami for two days - all the members
of CORE and JOI are getting together to think great visionary
thoughts about the future of their merged organizations as a single -
and hopefully stronger and more effective - entity. Doubtless the
meetings will be held in windowless rooms in some hotel basement, so
I doubt I will have opportunities to savor the southern Florida climate.

MLK Day on Monday - have a great long weekend,

- Mike
