<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

On Monday night I belatedly managed to see a demonstration of Ben
Holtzmann's Open House exhibit that transforms global earthquake
seismic signals into the acoustic band perceptible to human ear, and
plays them with a dramatic circle of speakers representing different
stations around the globe - aahh - if only the human ear had as much
bandwidth and dynamic range as modern seismic recording systems - it
was a very impressive demonstration.

It is budget time right now - so Pat, Edie and I are grappling with
preparing our budget for presentation to the University in time for
the new fiscal year July 1st. Yet another year of tough choices
reinforces the inescapable adage about there never being enough
money.

Thanks to LDEO Advisory Board member Barbara Engle, I spent a great
evening on Thursday at the fifth annual Wings awards downtown - Wings
is an interesting organization with the mission to bring recognition
to intrepid women explorers in a wide range of research fields. The
highlight of the evening was Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill star Uma
Thurmon presenting the lifetime achievement award to Jane Goodall.

I am out at Scripps as I write this on Friday afternoon - meetings
with new Director Tony Haymet this afternoon as well as a bevy of the
usual west coast suspects. It is sunny and in the middle sixties out
here.

Have a great weekend,

- Mike
