<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I have had a bad cold all week - like many other unfortunate folks,
it seems - and am glad that, at last, as Friday the 13th arrives, I
am feeling like a functioning human being again.

I was glad to welcome Nick McCave, from Cambridge, who is visiting
Peter DeMenocal's lab for three months. An always exciting Council of
Deans meeting consumed most of Tuesday morning and a very
interesting session with the Director of Education for Channel 13
ended the week before Jim Zachos superb colloquium this afternoon.

So with this highly abbreviated, and hurriedly prepared report, I
end the week.
