<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

A Senior Staff meeting, a Faculty Meeting and an ExCom all in the same week has a negative impact on the productivity…….

Last Sunday was the last of this year's Spring Public Lectures and it was a Tour de Force - Meredith Kelly and Meredith Nettles talking about Greenland and its glaciers - just wonderful. And we had a very successful Development reception and dinner afterwards. Thank you to all who attended.

It is busy week coming up - a couple of important events - the Gary Comer Memorial Symposium is on Wednesday at 3pm in Monell.

And then on Friday the ADVANCE program is organizing a highly innovative event that I recommend strongly. Based at the University of Michigan, the Players from the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching (CRLT) bring departmental cultures to life through provocative and comedic vignettes performed by real actors. The CRLT Players have recently performed at a number of campuses around the country, including Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. And on Friday at 3:30pm in Monell they perform for us. The title of the performance will be "15 Minutes: Academic Career Advising". The sketch will show how gender dynamics and faculty rank influence conversations and decision-making within a department. It will portray a junior-senior scientist mentoring process and examine how a variety of factors can hinder or foster effective mentoring. There will be time for discussion and the performance will be followed by a wine-and-cheese reception.

Also next week I have to go to the UK (another family wedding) - the current exchange rate will bankrupt me.

Have a great weekend,

- Mike
