<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

It was very fitting that on the day that Richard Seager's highly publicized (and notable) paper on sustained drought in the Southwest
US was published in Science, it was announced at ExCom that none other than Richard Seager is the recipient of the Director's Award for Outstanding Research Accomplishment. Congratulations, Richard. We will plan an event after the summer to formally recognize this achievement.

Lamont got some good press yesterday in the lead editorial in the Journal News because of Steve Chillrud and Jamie Ross and their research on pollution from NJ Transit trains - I particularly liked the phrase: ' residents of the proletarian neighborhood could only get action when prestigious Lamont scientists intervened.' I never knew we had the power!

Riders of the Morningside shuttle have been frustrated lately because of the slower trips caused by the diversion away from
Riverside Drive. Who knew that Riverside Drive was posted for "No Commercial Traffic" ? But it was never enforced. Enforcement began the other day. Pat O'Reilly held an emergency meeting yesterday with the management of the Golden Touch bus company and the Columbia University Transportation office. Golden Touch is in contact with city authorities to determine if this issue can be resolved through informal channels, or will require a formal permit process. We expect feedback early next week from the bus service to inform our next actions.

Tuesday night I was at a Rockefeller Brothers Foundation event to listen to Peter de Menocal's excellent talk on climate change, and Wednesday evening there was a well-attended reception at President Bollinger's house to recognize Jean Howard's great contributions as the Vice Provost for Diversity. Very sad to see Jean rotate out of this position - she has been a great force for good within the University.

After ExCom this morning and an hour long 12 way conference call with NSF this afternoon, I am ready for the long weekend,

Have a good one,

Mike
