<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I think there should be an age limit beyond which one is not allowed
to take red-eyes from the west coast! I came back from a fund
raising trip (a very successful one) on Tuesday morning and then
worked my way through a full day of meetings - ragged around the
edges at the end. But it was all worth it.

With the summer comes the intern program - and we are blessed with
38 new young and curious minds on Campus this year - welcome to all -
and I am confident that as in previous years, Dallas Abbott's
leadership will result in an important and valuable experience for
everyone.

Art Goldstein the Division Director of the Earth Sciences Division at
NSF visited for the day on Wednesday - that was a valuable
opportunity for communication with NSF leadership, and I hope
everyone (who wanted to) had at least some opportunity for
interaction with him. He was certainly highly complementary of
Kerstin Lehnert and Suzanne Carbotte's work with their several
digital data base projects, referring repeatedly to Lamont as a
'Center of Excellence' in this regard. Very gratifying! And of course
it is not Kerstin and Suzanne alone who deserve this credit - there
are many in their respective groups who do the hard work that wins us
this valuable recognition.

I hope everyone saw Mark Cane's recent announcement yesterday about
the three planned new permanent appointments onto the DEES staff -
three new and extremely valuable additions to Lamont that bring
important new expertise and interests: Terry Plank in Geochemistry,
Jerry McManus in Paleoceanography and Meredith Nettles in Seismology.

These are three individuals who will unquestionably continue, and
grow, our tradition of excellence and accomplishment.

Have a great weekend,

Mike
