<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

It is difficult to believe that after more than 35 years at the
Observatory, Jeff Weissel will be retiring at the end of next week.
He has contributed so much to our science and to the leadership of
LDEO. Thank you Jeff. And I hope we will see you often as you
continue in your Special Research Scientist position.

Another significant loss from our senior staff was announced this
past week - John Marra will be leaving us 1st September to take on a
new leadership role at Brooklyn College, where he will be a Professor
and Director of the Aquatic Research and Environmental Assessment
Center. Although congratulations are due, still it will be a great
loss to our efforts to build biological sciences here at Lamont.

Moving from people to ships, our research vessel Marcus G.
Langseth is nearing completion in Galveston and we expect her to sail
to start testing the multibeam sonar and dynamic positioning systems
in a week or so. The end of a much delayed and very challenging
project is in sight. If you would like to see some recent pictures

We began this summer seasons series of events on The Research Life
this afternoon - a good panel session on Washington DC, the Federal
agencies and proposal writing. The next session will be on July 27th
and will be focused our great favorite "PI Responsibilities"!

I will be away most of next week attending IODP meetings in
Bremerhaven Germany - we are members of IODP Management International
the corporation that runs IODP - and it is important that I go and
learn of plans to manage this large complex program through the
coming years of very challenging (i.e. much reduced) budgets.

It promises to be a gorgeous weekend - enjoy.

Mike
