FROM THE DIRECTOR
The week was dominated by two retirement parties - the more
than
forty year veteran Ray Long on Tuesday, and John Marra who
has 'only'
been at Lamont for thirty years on Friday. Two great losses
for the
Observatory - of course in two very different ways - but still
the
Observatory will not quite seem the same without them. We
all wish
Ray and John the best of good fortune - as John takes on new
challenges leading a research group at Brooklyn College, and
Ray
truly retires to a particularly beautiful part of Virginia.
ExCom chewed up most of this morning - but it was an efficient
meeting - for once we got a lot of business voted on and completed.
And as we slide into the end of summer, this afternoon was
the last
of our Research Life panel sessions, with Goran Ekstrom and
Sydney
Hemming helping me talk about the difficult issues of determining
authorship on research papers.
I am going to try to go sailing this weekend - so lets hope
for fair
winds and blue skies.
Have a good one,
Mike
