Folks on the faculty at Scripps cannot afford to live in La Jolla -
they tend to live an hour or so to the east and north east - where
the fires are... so our thoughts and best wishes are with many of our
good colleagues out there, large numbers of whom were evacuated from
their homes earlier this week. I know this for a fact because my
daughters PhD defense at Scripps was cancelled on Monday ( an hour
before its scheduled time) because too many of her Committee were
engaged in life survival activities. So I flew back from San Diego on
Tuesday without having added another PhD to the Purdy clan.

Thanks to Dake Chen's efforts we signed an MOA with a Chinese
delegation on Wednesday morning after which I spent an interesting
few hours with colleagues from JOI and Texas A&M strategizing about
the future of the Ocean Drilling Program as NSF's reduced resource
allocations place excruciating pressure on the programs operational
capabilities.

I met with the new leadership of STV downtown - very new perspectives
- I have invited them up to Lamont to meet everyone who is interested
in licensing and IP issues. Will let you know when it gets scheduled.

And congratulations to John Mutter for being elected a Fellow of AAAS.
