Bjorn Lomborg, author of "The
Skeptical Environmentalist -- Measuring the Real State
of the Environment" to speak at Columbia University's
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.
Lomborg will present views from
his controversial book, which "challenges widely
held beliefs that the environmental situation is getting
worse and worse." His book examines "a range
of major environmental problems that feature prominently
in headline news across the world."
Bjorn Lomborg is the Director
of the Environmental Assessment Institute in Copenhagen.
On
Saturday, October 5, the public is invited to explore
the work of 200 Columbia earth scientists and researchers
working to understand earthquakes, climate, oceans,
arctic volcanoes, and other mysteries of the Earth.
The
2nd Annual Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory Excellence
in Mentoring Award ceremony was held in Monell Auditorium
Friday May 24, 2002. This year's recipient, Dr. Gordon
Jacoby of the Tree Ring Laboratory was selected from
among a number of very worthy nominees. The Selection
Committee Chair, Brendan Buckley described the selection
process and read excerpts of statements from several
nominations.
Three
teams of Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory seismologists
are in Plattsburgh, New York, this week assessing damage
due to the largest earthquake to hit the New York State
and New England in the last 19 years.
The
Columbia Earth Institute will host the upcoming Meeting
of the Open GIS Consortium, Inc. (OGC) at the Lamont-Doherty
Earth Observatory in Palisades, New York, February 4-9,
2002.
Columbia's
president-elect Lee Bollinger took a tour of the 170-acre
Palisades, NY, campus today with Lamont-Doherty Earth
Observatory (LDEO) Director G. Michael Purdy. But
that
was not the only campus he saw. Dr. Bollinger was presented
with a photo of Columbia‚s ocean going campus,
the research vessel Maurice Ewing, managed by Lamont-Doherty's
Office of Marine Affairs.
