Unsampled Core Sampled Core

The image on the left was taken of a core soon after it was opened. On the right is what remains after intense sampling to produce what we call "high resolution" data necessary for resolving short-term climate such as in the Little Ice Age. Note the color change at approximately 12 centimeters in the section to the left. That is the peak transition to cold in the Little Ice Age.
