Views through a microscope -- What we look for in cores

Each sample taken is weighed, washed, dried, and weighed again. Usually the material is seived through a 63 micron mesh, and for finer material such as volcanic ash and hematite-stained grains, a 150 micron seive is also used.

The "grains" and microfossils are counted and data produced in total numbers or percentage of total. Some microfossils are used for radiocarbon dating.
