Rusty Lotti Bond- Curator -Born in Danville, Virginia; grew up in various parts of the U.S. including periods of time spent on grandparents' ranch in Colorado and farm in North Carolina, and four years in Germany (I'm a military brat). Have degree in Museology from New York State University. Have been curator of the Lamont Deep-Sea Sample Repository since 1985.
A large facility such as this one carries with it many features of a museum and library, as well as scientific laboratory. Work for me in the Repository consists largely of securing and maintaining funding for the core repository. I act as liason between funding agencies, Lamont researchers and the outside scientific community with respect to repository scientific resources. I direct and oversee the curation of deep-sea material taken by research ships; train and supervise personnel involved in describing cores and in conducting technical investigations of cores. I'm also responsible for database design and maintenance as well as design and development of the Repository webpage. A more recent involvement has been with the Saturday Workshops for Educators. Most recently participated in four-week research cruise, summer of 1998, aboard U.S. RESEARCH VESSEL KNORR as curator/archivist of deep-sea material sailing out of St. John's, Newfoundland to Reykjavik, Iceland. In the summer of 1993 I served as curator/archivist of deep-sea material aboard the R.V. MAURICE EWING out of Reykjavik, Iceland to Woods Hole, Massachusettes. Prior to that I was invited curatorial advisor aboard the Soviet RESEARCH VESSEL MSTISLAV KELDYSH for three weeks at sea, port-of-call, Lisbon, Portugal.
I love travel, collecting shells and rocks, and painting. I love to cook and garden and wish the day was twice as long. Until June 29, 2005, when he left us, my interests were largely directed to spending time with my husband, Gerard Bond. I enjoyed being his field hand in the Canadian Rockies or Alaska. We hiked into incredibly beautiful and remote areas, camped out with bears, listened to the wolves. We read together, worked together, played together. His loss will forever impact my life.
