June 1992 and November 1993

BEST was a field program consisting of moored instruments and 3 hydrographic surveys, designed to address the following questions, about the Benguela Current off the coast of South Africa:

  1. What is the transport, and what are the sources of the Benguela Current and how do they vary with time?
  2. What is the dominant means of transfer of Agulhas water into the Atlantic?
  3. What is the intreaction of the Agulhas eddy field with the larger scale circulation?
