Dye Tracer Experiment
May 26 - June 06, 1997

A dye tracer, Rhodamine-WT, injected into the bottom boundary layer at the foot of the shelfbreak front in the Middle Atlantic Bight is being used to investigate small scale mixing and circulation near the frontal boundary. The study area is near the ONR CM&O mooring on the outer shelf south of Marth's Vineyard, and although funded by NSF the project is associated with the CM&O program. Results from a pilot cruise June 1996 (see accompanying GRL manuscript) demonstrate the utility of the technique and provide evidence for the first time of convergent flow associated with the frontogenesis. The full experiment is scheduled for May 26-June6, 1997 on the R.V. OCEANUS.
