Zuun Mod, Mongolia



Tree growth of this stand, isolated in the Mongolian Steppe, is limited by precipitation. Ring width series from Zuun Mod aids in the reconstruction of the Kherlen River streamflow.

The trees pictured above is Siberian larch [Larix sibirica]. The genus Larix is distributed circumpolar with many different species. Several species exist in North America. Despite being a conifer, it sheds its needles each fall after turning a golden yellow.

In northeastern North America, this provides a second fall [pictured above] after the infamous multi-colored fall.
