Adrienne and Beth had many an adventure while traveling to the BOTTOM of the Earth in the center of East Antarctica. While they might look like your average person (WELL MAYBE NOT THAT AVERAGE!), don’t you think they have to be a little crazy to want to travel over 9000 miles (15,000 km) to visit Antarctica, the coldest place on the planet, in November…the beginning of winter??? Where would YOU want to travel in November? Adrienne and Beth are scientists who study the Earth, and in order to do that they need to go out into the field. They traveled to Antarctica in order to map a hidden mountain range called the Gamburtsev Mountains. The Mountains were expected to be about the same size as the European Alps, but no one has ever seen them. They have been hidden for over 14 million years! Some of you might wonder how mountains can be hidden. Wouldn't you see them popping up under the ice? Mountains are pretty noticeable after all! Surprisingly, in some places the ice is SO thick the tips of the tallest mountains don’t reach the top to break the ice. Being on top is like walking on a big flat sheet of white that goes on and on and on - not even a small hill in sight! To ‘see’ the mountains the science team used several special tools..but you can learn more about all of that while you travel along with Adrienne and Beth and help them in this special polar adventure.
