Implementation Workshop Report

U.S. GEOTRACES hosted a community workshop at the University of Southern California (1 - 3 October 2008) to develop an implementation plan for sections in the Pacific Ocean.  The report from that workshop can be downloaded from the link above.

Summaries of Projects Recommended for Funding

Investigators whose proposals to participate in the North Atlantic section have been recommended for funding have voluntarily submitted the Project Summary of their proposal to be posted here. These summaries can be consulted by cruise participants to begin coordinating sampling and other activities during the cruise. In particular, persons who will attend the cruise planning workshop (March, 2010, Norfolk VA, exacts dates to be determined) are encouraged to review these summaries in advance of the meeting.

Statements of Interest

GEOTRACES was designed on the principle that studying multiple trace elements and isotopes (TEIs) simultaneously, together with access to key information about ocean circulation, will lead to more new knowledge about the sources, sinks and internal cycling of TEIs than would be possible by studying a single element or isotope in isolation.  It is hoped that individual proposals to participate in the North Atlantic section will reflect this principle by developing linkages among the various individual studies.  To facilitate that effort, PIs have voluntarily submitted the statements of interest listed here.

Those interested in submitting proposals are encouraged to contact PIs on the list to develop collaborations, or informal relationships, that will strengthen their respective proposals.

The list will be updated as new statements are submitted; so interested investigators may wish to check back periodically.

Management Services

Information about services offered by the project management team in preparation for, during and following the North Atlantic Section cruise is provided to assist investigators in preparing their proposals. The Project Description of the Management Proposal can be downloaded here. An abbreviated description of management services can be downloaded here.

Cruise Track

A series of images in PowerPoint (.ppt), Portable Document Format (.pdf) and JPEG (.jpg) formats may be downloaded for use in preparing proposals. Tentative full depth station locations are shown as white diamonds (see Implementation Plan).

US GEOTRACES Atlantic Implementation Plan

The U.S. Atlantic Section Implementation Plan was created by combining three working group reports from the U.S. GEOTRACES Atlantic Section Workshop held in Woods Hole September 22-24, 2008. An initial draft was made available for public comment until December 1, 2008. Based on comments, and more recently some suggestions by the U.S. GEOTRACES SSC, it was further revised to create the final draft, the availability of which was announced via e-mail on December 24, 2008 (download announcement here).

Implementation of U.S. GEOTRACES Sections

At its annual meeting in May, 2008, the U.S. GEOTRACES SSC reviewed the scientific objectives and proposed ocean sections described in the reports of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian basin workshops convened in 2007 by the international GEOTRACES program, and selected sections in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans for initial implementation under the U.S. contribution to GEOTRACES. These intentions were broadcast to the U.S. Chemical Oceanography community via an e-mail announcement distributed on 25 June, 2008 (download full announcement here). That announcement contained an open invitation to participate in planning workshops where the initial components of implementation plans for these sections were developed.

Initial planning took place at the following workshops :

U.S. GEOTRACES Atlantic Workshop, 22 - 24 September 2008

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, Massachussetts USA

U.S. GEOTRACES Pacific Section Implementation Workshop, 1 - 3  October 2008

University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California USA

As a result of these workshops, the US GEOTRACES SSC, in consultation with the NSF Chemical Oceanography Program, determined that the North Atlantic section would be implemented first, tentatively in late 2010, followed by a Pacific section in 2012 or 2013.
