Passive Hydroacoustic Research

Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University

Seismically generated T-waves are used to detect and locate submarine earthquakes along mid-ocean ridge spreading centers and oceanic transforms

Hydrophones record the vocalizations of whales and other marine mammals.  Working closely with marine biologists, LDEO researchers are using this information to characterize the distribution of  various whale species in the Indian Ocean Basin.

Icebergs and outlet glaciers may represent a significant source of noise within the southern oceans.  These acoustic signals can be used to understand the dynamics of ice movement.

By listening to the oceans, the source signature of explosions can be identified.  Our efforts to understand sound propagation in the oceans support the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
