I finished my PhD in October 2003 at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, UK. I class myself as a physical oceanographer with an interest in applying this approach to paleoceanography.
While at Southampton I worked with Eelco Rohling and David Smeed on sea-level reconstructions based on a simple hydraulic basin-exchange model. This work went well and resulted in a series of technical publications as well as one applied publication for Nature [Siddall et al. Nature 2003]. Having moved on from Southampton my first postdoctorate position was with the Climate and Environmental Physics Group at the University of Bern Switzerland. As part of the European STOPFEN network I worked with Thomas, Stocker and others on the development of paleo-proxies for use in ocean models. I looked at 231 Pa/ 230 Th, which is used as an aid to reconstruct past ocean circulation strength.
I now hold a research fellowship with the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, where I am working on Nd isotopes in the ocean in the Geochemistry group. My principal mentor is Bob Anderson but I am working with a number of colleagues here. Nd isotopes are an additional way to consider past changes in ocean circulation.
