Dr. Sean Higgins, Senior Research Fellow at LDEO, and Director of LDEO’s Office of Marine Operations, will guide us on a voyage of exploration alongside LDEO scientists as they travel millions of miles in pursuit of new knowledge about our planet through its rich seagoing history, to learn how scientists conduct research at sea and about the exciting discoveries they have made.

LDEO’s research vessel, the Marcus G. Lanseth serves as the national seismic research facility for the United States academic community. Its unique capability allows it to provide both 2D and 3D maps of the earth’s structure-- the earth’s seafloor and what lies below. Expeditions have collected sediment cores for understanding climate variations throughout the earth’s history, sampled seawater for determining physical and chemical properties of the oceans, studied the movement of plate tectonics and continental drift, and deployed remotely operating vehicles for studying submarine volcanoes.
