LDEO Open House
Every year, generally in October, Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory opens its
doors to the public during its annual Open House. Over 4000 members of the
public, including many teachers, school groups, and families with children,
visit the Observatory to view exhibits, hear lectures, and participate in
hands-on learning experiences designed to inform and capture the excitement of
cutting-edge, environmental research. The Open House is one of the ways that
LDEO scientists return knowledge back to the public that helps support their
research.

Since 2005, my colleagues and I in the Biological Oceanography group at LDEO
have presented a hands-on, interactive exhibit on aquatic food webs at the LDEO
Open House that I originally developed. Hundreds of people stopped by our booth
to make their own plankton net, drag their net in our "pond", and
view what they captured under the video microscope. This exhibit has been a
tremendous success every year, providing many participants with their first
viewing and insight into plankton and aquatic food webs.
