the Arctic ice canopy
- SCICEX
Unclassified use of US Navy submarines as science platforms. in the Arctic.
The USS Hawkbill (SSN 666) surfaced
at the North Pole during the SCICEX cruise in 1998 (and again in 1999). This picture
was taken during the 1998 surfacing. The sailors in the foreground are playing
chess. Behind them Jay Ardai (LDEO) and Lt. Val Schmidt (of the Hawkbill) are
monitoring the status of a winch that has lowered a small sampling device to the
seafloor. The Hawkbill is in the background. Notice the large block of ice on
the foredeck. When the boat surfaced through the ice, this block of ice remained
on deck.
