Postdoctoral Fellowship

Center for Nonlinear Earth Systems

Columbia Earth Institute

CNES is an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research group of Columbia University focused on the study of the dynamics of earth systems. We seek applicants for a Postdoctoral Fellowship resident at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory or of any of the other collaborative departments at Columbia University, such at the Department of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics. Present CNES areas of study are the mechanics of brittle and granular media, earthquake physics, fluid flow in reactive media, atmospheric dynamics, and ocean dynamics. The successful applicant need not work in one of our existing areas of investigation but should be interested in treating earth systems as dynamical systems. The position is for one year and may be extended for a second year. Applications should be submitted by mail and consist of a CV, statement of research interests, a summary of the PhD thesis and any relevant preprints or reprints, and the names and e-mail addresses of 3 referees. Applications should be sent to Prof. Christopher H. Scholz, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Palisades, NY, 10964. Tel. 914-365-8360, e-mail
