Education
1999-2005: Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Ph.D. Earth Science
Dissertation: “Investigations of the structural and hydrologic context of gas hydrate deposits on Hydrate Ridge, Oregon.”
1993-1997: Rice University, B.A. Geology (cum laude).
Senior honors thesis: “Temperature and Pressure Constraints on Vein Deformation in the Chugach Metamorphic Complex, Alaska: a fluid inclusion study.”
Research Interests
Interaction of geologic structure, sediment physical properties, and fluid flow in the formation of
  gas hydrate deposits.
Hydrogeology and tectonic evolution of accretionary margins
Physical properties of sediments and their influence on subduction zone mechanics.
Professional Experience
2006 - current: Post Doctoral Research Scientist, Borehole Research Group, Lamont - Doherty
Earth Observatory, Columbia University, Palisades, NY
2005-2006: Post Doctoral Researcher, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla, CA
2002: (Summer) Sedimentologist / Structural Geologist on Ocean Drilling Program Leg 204,
Hydrate Ridge, Oregon. Categorized and logged core samples, synthesized core, physical properties, and well log data, wrote and edited site descriptions, and developed the geologic history and context of the recovered lithologies.
1999-2005: Graduate Research Assistant. Conducted independent laboratory research in soil
physical properties. Built and maintained consolidometers.
1996: Undergraduate Field Research Assistant, Winnemucca, NV. Measured and recorded
structural orientations of bedding, faulting, and folding. Mapped formation boundaries.
Teaching Experience
2005-2006: Lecturer, University of California San Diego.
Classes Taught: Introduction to Field Geology, Geology of National Parks, History of the Earth and Evolution, Methods of Teaching Earth Science
2002: (Winter Quarter) Graduate Teaching Assistant, Structural and Field Geology. Planned and
taught the lab portion of the class, introduced geologic mapping techniques in field sessions, and produced a teaching manual for the lab activities.
2001: (Winter Quarter) Graduate Teaching Assistant, The Earth. Lectured, led a discussion
section, and wrote and graded problem sets for this undergraduate, not-for-majors course of ~200.
1997-1999: Teacher, Southern Vance High School, Henderson, N.C. Designed and implemented
physical science, earth science, and oceanography science curriculum for grades 9-12 in a rural, under-resourced school. Managed classroom discipline, led field trips, and co-founded the science club.
