I grow up in the northern part of germany (Schleswig-Holstein) in the small village Emmelsbüll- Horsbüll. I lived some minutes away from the danish border and directly at the North Sea dike. This may be the reason of my fascination regards the ocean, who knows?I started to study physical oceanography at the Institut für Meereskunde at the Universität Hamburg, where I finished with a PhD. in Geowissenschaften in July 1999.
In a break of 6 month between 1995 and 1996 I worked as a visiting scientist at the former Flinders Institute for Atmospheric and Marine Sciences (FIAMS), Adelaide, Australia. That was a great opportunity for me to learn more about oceanography, live and surfing (wow). From mid 2000 to beginning of 2002 I did a postdoc in a joint project between Lamont-Doherty Earth Obersvatory of Columbia University and Institut für Meerekunde at the University Kiel working about variability in water mass formation and transformation in the Nordic (Greenland, Norwegian and Island) seas. From May to December 2002 I worked as an Investigador at the Programa Regional de Oceanografía Física y Clima (PROFC) in Concepcion, Chile.Since December 2002 I am working at the Institut für Meereskunde at the University Kiel which is now the Leibniz-Institut für Meereswissenschaften.

My major research interest are the large scale ocean circulation, its variabilty on decadal time scales, and its interaction with biogeochemical cycles, mixed-layer dynamics and transfer of properties from the mixed-layer into the interior (thermocline and deep water ventilation). My family: Click here! and see section PICTURES for more (update Nov. 2002)
