Modeling the output of airgun seismic source arrays

 

            My efforts in this area started with a simple, interactive software package for optimizing airgun array tuning. It was used to select chamber sizes for Conrad’s 10-gun array and Ewing’s 6, 10 and 20-gun arrays. Subsequently, the modeling library was used to determine array directivity, and as the need arose, this effort lent itself to the prediction of isopleths [contours of equal pressure] and SPLs [sound pressure levels] critical to the protection of marine mammals.The results of this modeling form a crucial part of every Ewing/Langseth  marine mammal permit. Ongoing development includes seafloor interaction in shallow water areas.

 

Development of a high resolution, shallow water imaging system

 

            I have assembled a portable, 48-channel high resolution seismic acquisition system.  The full system has abeen deployed approximately once per year, beginning with the Lamont-Doherty/UTIG Strataform  cruise during the summer of 1996; continuing with more East coast work during 1997, and long cruises in the Persian Gulf (1998) and Gulf of California (1999).  These successes have placed Lamont-Doherty in the forefront among academic institutions in the ability to enter the arena of high resolution, shallow water seismic imaging, which is continuing to increase in importance to earth scientists.

 

 

New ways to look at data

 

            If I have a science specialty, it is velocity analysis. I have created a number of software tools for this, notably JDseis, which is licensed for external sale and use by the Columbia Innovation Enterprise (about a dozen copies have been sold, and are in use world-wide).  More important, JDseis is the principal in-house tool for velocity analysis of MCS and refraction data.  This package includes many techniques for innovative, graphically-based approaches, such as forward modeling of diffractions in reflection profiles, and modeling scanned analog sonobuoy data. While developing the latter process, I discovered some new ways of extracting velocity information from parts of the recorded wavefield which are usually ignored.  This approach is in early stages of development, but I have obtained some funding from NAVO for acquisition and analysis of new data, and the project shows great promise.

PC World  1988 – 1990

 

In the early days of Laptop computers, I was asked to evaluate them for a national magazine.  Between July 1988 and December 1990, ten articles were published under my name in PC World, then and now one of the premier computer magazines in the US.  These pieces were reviews of computer systems, and fell into two groups. Three were reviews of individual systems, appearing in the “Hardware Shelf” section of the magazine.  The remaining seven were review “roundups” wherein I would test, evaluate and compare between five and eight computers.  My specialty was laptops and transportables, and testing included rating battery life.  For this purpose,  I wrote several software programs, which were subsequently used by other PC World reviewers. 

 

Publishing these articles involved intense interaction with PC World’s editors, and I had to learn a terse, densely informative writing style, vastly different from the leisurely and somewhat turgid exposition typical of scientific journal articles.  PC World’s readers and publishers seemed pleased with my work, and my photograph and an interview appeared as  the “In this issue” feature in the March, 1990 PC World.
