Bangladesh GIS Project

For this project we will you the GIS to assist us in understanding the distribution of Arsenic contamination within the Araihazar region of Bangladesh and to formulate mitigation proposals.

Step One

Start Arc Catalog and explore the available data.

List here the data set available:

Step Two

Start ArcMap and begin a project, name the project Araihaza_Wells.  First load in the Admin_0, Admin_1 and Admin_3 boundary data sets. Arrange these layers so you can see all three boundaries. (Remember the Symbol/no fill trick)

Next add in the Iconos image. This is a 1-foot resolution satellite image of the study area. Spend a little time exploring this image. Give a brief description of the area below:

Next, load in the well data set.  After viewing the distribution of the family wells open the attribute table for the wells and look at the fields of information that are available.

List these fields below and define the types of values in the fields.

Step Three:

We will now explore ways to classify the well data.

Zoom into the Araihaza wells.  Classify the well data layer by natural breaks, equal interval and by quantile

What method do you prefer to classify the dataset and why?

Step 4

Slect all well having an arsenic level grater than 600 mg/l ???? Export out this selected set to create a new well data set called “highest_arsenic”

Next from the all wells data select the wells with less than 50 mg/l. Again, export out this data to create a new well data layer called “lowest_arsenic”.

After creating these data sets add them to your project.

Visually survey the data and look for any spatial patterns.  Describe below your general assessment.

Step four

We would now like to identify all the lowest_Arsenic wells within a 10 kilometer CHECK distance radius of a bad well. To do this we will create a 10KM buffer aouond all the Higest_Arsenic level well and then find all the “Lowest _Arsenic” wells that fall within this buffer.

Step five

Now that we have answered the question what good wells are within 10 KMs of a bad well let’s create a report to summarize our results.

Use the report writer to create a report that list the well

What suggestions do you have for extending this study?
