Graphs

1.)  (15p) Download this Excel spreadsheet. Read through the tab 'rules and example' for some tips about how to make nice graphs (Brian Mailloux put this together).

a) - c) Improve the graphs on the worksheets labeled a) to c), copy all three graphs into a Word or Powerpoint file, add a figure caption to each figure, and print the Word file and hand it in. All graphs should fit on one page.

Boxplots

2.) (10p) The workbook Cancer.xlsx (in Chapter 4 directory) contains data on all of the 50 states' cigarette use per household per capita and their rates of bladder cancer, lung cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer, and leukemia per 100,000. An additional variable, Cig Use category, breaks down the cigarette use into three categories: 0 for low rates of cigarette use, 1 for medium, and 2 for high.
a) Open the workbook and create boxplots of the rates of bladder cancer, kidney cancer, lung cancer, and leukemia broken down by by cigarette use. Label the charts and work sheets appropriately.
b) Create a table of univariate statistics for the rate of each illness broken down by cigarette use.
c) Does there appear any relationship between the levels of illnesses and the level of cigarette use in the states? Defend your answers with your charts, statsitics, and tables.
d) There is one state with teh high level of cigarette use but a relatively low level of lung cancer. Identify this state.
e) Put your figures and tables and answers into a work document and add captions to them. Hand in a printout of what you did.
