Sedimentary Geology (EESC GU4223x)

An overview of sedimentology and stratigraphy, for majors and concentrators in Earth and environmental sciences, and for graduate students from other disciplines. Undergraduates in such related fields as Earth and environmental engineering, environmental biology, environmental chemistry, sustainable development and archaeology are also welcome. Lectures/class discussions, labs. and field exercises are integrated, with emphasis on processes, the characteristics of sediments and sedimentary rocks, interpretation of the geological record, and practical applications. An alternate year course, to be offered in Fall, 2020 following my 2019-20 sabbatical leave in Australia. Field trips are provisionally on Friday, September 18, 2020 to Fire Island (spring tide), and Friday-Sunday, October 2-4, 2020 to the Hudson Valley and Catskills. Sarah Giles is confirmed as the teaching assistant.


Geological Excursion to Death Valley, California (EESC UN1010y)

A Spring Break field trip for first-year and sophomore students with little or no prior background in the Earth and environmental sciences, striking a balance between the examination of modern phenomena and examples from the geological record, and with emphasis on developing interpretations from observations.The next iteration of this course will be in Spring, 2021. I am accepting applications.
