My research centers on biological oceanography and in particular on the microbial ecology of surface ocean plankton.  The photosynthetic plankton provide almost all of the food for other marine organisms.  They also interact with the cycling of a variety of chemicals through the environment. I study the role plankton play in regulating atmospheric gases like carbon dioxide that impact global climate.  I also work to determine the impact of increased nutrient loading on coastal water quality and how plankton respond to the entry of pollutants into marine food chains.
