Howard Kunreuther, Cecilia Yen Koo Professor of Decision Sciences and Public Policy and Management of the Wharton School, will join the new Center for Hazards and Risk Research in July as the Center's first visiting scholar.

An expert in decision processes related to hazards risk assessment and risk management, Prof. Kunreuther's research explores the ways in which society can deal more effectively with problems of catastrophic risk. Prof. Kunreuther co-directs the Wharton School's Risk Management and Decision Processes Center. Established in 1986, the Wharton Center works in four prinicipal areas related to risk management. These include Individual and Organizational Decision Processes Regarding Risk; Insurance and Risk Management; Sustainable Development; and Siting of Hazardous Facilities.

During his one year visitorship, Kunreuther will help Columbia's new Hazards Center to explore connections between science, public policy, and private insurance in developing strategies for managing low-probability, high risk events.
