Editor's Note

It wasn’t until the mid 1960s that geoscientists began to first glimpse the earth as an integrated system.  Until that time individual earth processes such as volcanism, earthquakes and mountain building were seen as very separate occurrences with curious proximity in time and space.  Through a number of unintended discoveries the picture of the earth as a system started to develop and nothing short of a revolution in the earth sciences followed.  The authors of this selection do a great job of not only outlining our basic understanding of the plate tectonic theory, they offer a window into the development of a scientific revolution.
