Chapter Six

Editor's Note

Understanding the nature and processes of environmental change is fundamentally important for human existence.  The dynamic nature of climate coupled with the impact of human activity leads to a volatile and uncertain future in many parts of the world.  One of the most important areas of research in the Geosciences today involves the evolution of global climate over time.  On more regional scales environmental changes related to desertification have had devastating effects.  The pace of global change and the influence of human activity have required a greater scientific understanding of the processes and evolution of environments of climatic extreme.
