Minerals
are the building blocks of the rocks that make up the earth’s
lithosphere. Understanding these building blocks gives us greater
insight into rock genesis, and the dynamic processes that act on the
earth’s lithosphere. Later chapters will focus on the rocks as
records of earth history and as windows into geologic processes that
form them.
The introduction for this chapter gives a brief
overview of chemical principles and minerals, with an emphasis on the
silicate group. The chapter on minerals is intended to give the
reader a general overview, but by no means gives an in depth treatment
of the subject. Further exploration of the topic is best pursued
through a number of college level texts on Physical Geology found in
print form and available in most college libraries. The Windows
on the Universe website is interactive and not linear. Threads
can be pursued on topics in multiple directions. I encourage the
reader to pursue each of these threads to its completion. It is
also important that the reader set the website for “advanced.”
This will insure that reading is at a level appropriate for an
introductory college student. Once set for an advanced reader
enter the Chemistry and Minerals section, from the menu, to enter the
world of minerals, matter and the earth.
