Chapter Ten

Editor's Note

Sedimentary rocks that form at the earth’s surface from sediments eroded from pre-existing rock.  The processes acting on the sediment at the time of deposition are commonly reflected within the rocks they form and preserved over long periods of geologic time.  Clues to the surface environment during deposition can also be surmised from the sedimentary record.  These rocks that form at the earth’s surface offer nothing less than a snapshot of earth history, an opportunity to study ancient climates, long eroded mountain ranges, and tread on ancient landscapes lost to the relentless power of a changing planet
