Our 2022 event celebrated 20 years of "Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor!" Environmental educators, partner groups, Student Conservation Association members, DEC fisheries teams and DEC staff from throughout the region worked together to support our many school groups as they sampled the river. Once again our upriver sites were visited by members of the DEC fisheries teams who brought full sized fish for students to identify and enjoy. The threat of rain did not deter our sampling teams as they explored our dynamic Hudson River estuary. This year over 3500 students and ~ 700 adults sampled at 82 sites along the river. Over the past 20 years we have worked with ~63,880 students, teachers and environmental educators measuring salinity, chemistry, turbidity, biology and sediments.This year 3802 fish were netted from 48 different species. Over the twenty years of this event we have netted 43,252 fish from 90 different species have been netted, representing close to 40% of the 237 species documented in the Hudson River watershed! Atlantic MenhadenSampling Background: October 13th was overcast. Rain threatened the sampling teams; many ended their sampling in the rain. However, leading up to this year's event, areas throughout the Hudson Valley had been parched. Several locations, including Poughkeepsie, posting their hottest August of record! Drought conditions persisted through much of the region into the fall. On 10/13/22 the saltfront (measured @100 ppm chloride or 181 ppm total salinity) had pushed up the estuary to ~ Poughkeepsie RM76. Where the salt goes so go the fish!
