<>  LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I feel I should say something inspiring in the first weekly report of the New Year.  But I have found that I can only say inspiring things when I am myself feeling inspired, and today just is not one of those days, I fear.  So there it is.  Maybe next week...

In fact, I am greatly looking forward to next week, because for the first time in months, my office will be fully staffed.  I am very pleased to announce that we have hired Violeta Tomsa as a secretary, and her first day with us is on Monday.  Beverly Wuerfel has been holding the fort single-handedly for some time - a fact for which I am extremely grateful.  We have tempted Violeta away from Seismology where she has, for the past several years, been providing Paul Richards and his group with excellent support.  Paul's loss is our gain.

Please be careful driving home tonight and over the weekend - I shall be spending at least one small part of it (i.e. the weekend) ogling expensive plastic boats in the Javits Center at the NY Boat Show - so if you are down there you will doubtless see me at the Beneteau exhibit, dreaming of warmer climates, and weeks that contain more than seven days.

Have a safe weekend,

- Mike
