<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Sydney Hemming and her Post-doctoral Selection Committee are in the middle of their process to select next year's LDEO post docs. As in previous years, we have an absolutely superb group of candidates and it will be extremely difficult to select the two finalists. Members of the research staff should review the files and provide their input as soon as possible, but no later than February 21st.
Some news of a forthcoming happy and celebratory event:
The Associate Directors and I decided last year to establish an award to recognize truly exceptional research performance. Last year when we carried out the annual merit review process, looking at the publication records and activity reports of the research staff, we found that there was one individual whose productivity in terms of high quality, high impact publications in major journals, whose leadership of the national and international research communities, whose contributions to welfare and well-being of the Observatory were distinctly and clearly superior. It was therefore decided to create the "Director's Award for Outstanding Research Performance". This award will not necessarily be awarded each year - only when a truly exceptional individual is identified, nominated by one of the Associate Director's and agreed to by the Director in consultation with the Associate Directors and Chair of DEES. All members of the Observatory's senior and junior research staff are eligible. The 2002 award will be presented (belatedly) at 3:30 pm on February 24 in the Monell auditorium. The recipient will present a talk; there will be a brief award ceremony, followed by a reception. I look forward to seeing you there. The recipient is Bob Anderson.
Some more good news, and even perhaps a hint of progress!
We have for sometime recognized the need to improve the career opportunities for Engineers at Lamont. I am pleased to announce our first appointment to a new position ladder that we have created to enhance the career path for engineers within the Observatory. Tim Newberger of the Division of Ocean and Climate Physics has been appointed to the position of Engineer in the research rank of Staff Associate, and we hope that over the next few months other members of our engineering staff will have the opportunity to shift over to this new ladder. If you do not know about this and want to find out more, look our web site at http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/Director/policies/engineers.html or contact the Human Resources Department x-8847 Mary Mokhtari.
Have a great weekend,
- Mike
