A small group of our Division Administrators successfully invaded the
7th floor of the NSF building earlier this week. They spent a day primarily
in the Ocean Sciences Division meeting with program officers and receiving
briefings on the NSF proposal review process. They came back with many
messages, but most notable among them were:
1) NSF does not want proposals after the target date. Late
proposals appear hastily prepared and their success rate reflects that.
2) PIs need to talk to their Program Managers more, especially before
submitting proposals.
No surprises here………both these points are excellent pieces of advice.
The first of this year's Public Lecture series is this weekend – Sunday
at 3:00 pm in Monell Auditorium. Robin Bell is talking on the somewhat piratical
title of “Exploring the Hudson and Finding Sunken Treasures”. I am confident
that it will be a great talk. Perhaps ‘finding sunken treasures’
could be a new way to increase our endowment…
I have to spend a couple of days in DC next week – CORE meetings – not
thrilling, but necessary.
The sun is shining and the sky is clear blue, so it can’t possibly snow
this weekend!
Have a good one,
- Mike
