<> OCEANOGRAPHY WIRELESS NETWORK

The Lamont wireless network has been extended to cover the entire Oceanography building.  There are two 802.11b (11Mbit/sec) access points in the hall toward the north and south ends of each floor which should provide coverage for all offices and public spaces.  While the wireless net will provide mobility and flexibility, the wired office connections are still the primary network connection as they provide at least nine times more bandwidth than a wireless connection.  As usual, set your networking for a dynamic IP address (DHCP) and you may use the wireless SSID 'LDEO-wireless' or 'ANY'.

<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Yesterday was not a good day!  I was on the 12:30 pm Delta shuttle out of National Airport into La Guardia - I had to walk out of a CORE meeting on Capitol Hill in order to get back for an Earth Institute Academic Committee meeting at 2:00 pm.  Well, the 12:30 shuttle landed at La Guardia at 8:00 pm ......so, I missed my 2:00 pm meeting ..... and spent the afternoon having unreasonable and unkind thoughts about airlines and air traffic control systems.

But, the day and a half in DC were very useful - because warm and fuzzy speeches from Senator Ernest Hollings (SC) and Rep. Patrick Kennedy (RI), there were more factual presentations from Jim Watkins as head of the US Oceans Commission, Leon Panetta as head of the Pew Oceans Commission, Rita Colwell (Director, NSF), and Conrad Lautenbacher (Head of NOAA).

There were many good and strong words for Ocean Research, but DC is distracted by thoughts of war right now - the $200B price tag that folks are putting on that activity is dominating thoughts of future funding.

Robin Bell gave our first public lecture last Sunday and that was a great success - standing room only for her entertaining talk on the Hudson River.  Marc Spiegelman will be our next speaker on March 30th.

On Monday, we had a lunch over in Lamont Hall for ten year Columbia veterans:  Robert Arko, Kathleen Carlsen, Patricia Catanzaro, Eugene Gorman, Alexey Kaplan, Naomi Naik, Victoria Nazario all attended and received their certificates of recognition and silver Columbia pins.  Moanna St. Clair, Chris Leidhold and Al Walsh were unable to be there, and will receive their presentations in a less formal manner.

The Observatory's Biennial report is now available.  Copies will be sent to all - 500 folks on campus as well as to more than 1500 alumni and friends around the world.  When you get your copy let me know what you think of it (for me the photo of Taro is the highlight........)

Have a great weekend.

- Mike
