<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
On Tuesday we held a day long internal discussion to talk about data base
needs for the future, and brainstorm about possible ways to use the new NSF
Cyberinfrastructure program to fund a growing set of data-related programs
and initiatives around the campus. It was a very useful day, that emphasized
the diversity of the activities that already exist, as well as the many challenges
that lie in the future. Sometime in early July we anticipate that a group
of NSF program managers will visit for a day, and we will use this opportunity
to both learn more about the Cyberinfrastructure program, and, by presenting
some strawman ideas, attempt to get some specific feedback on how we can best
tap into this possibly substantial new source of NSF funding.
I will spend most of Monday at NSF talking about this, as well as a myriad
of other issues (e.g. the EWING refit), and will take advantage of my presence
in DC to have lunch with one of Lamont's most distinguished alumni - Frank
Press.
A matter of some interest from downtown is the impending appointment of
a new member of the University's leadership: a Vice President for Research.
No word on who or when as yet, but this (obviously) will be an important new
position.
The Earth Institute is nearing the end of a gargantuan effort to complete
a comprehensive strategic plan - a plan that will be presented to President
Bollinger at the end of this month. Following his review it will be widely
circulated around the University and you will see, for the first time I think,
a coherent articulation of the goals and aspirations of this ambitious initiative.
Peter Schlosser and the Academic Committee of the EI have been heavily engaged
in this activity for the past many months - when and if summer ever arrives,
I am sure they will be glad that his huge effort is completed.
Keep dry over the weekend,
- Mike
