<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I flew to Norway on the weekend and got back in town on Wednesday afternoon.  Along with Paul Ljunggren, John Diebold and Al Walsh of the Marine Department, I was looking at a used seismic vessel that is for sale at a very attractive price, and may be a better solution for our future than trying to refit EWING.  Dale Chayes was there too just a day or so before us.

We have no idea how 'real' this is yet.  We are refining cost estimates for the modifications that would be necessary, and then will await word from NSF as to whether they are willing to review a proposal. At the same time, we have to continue working with the community - UNOLS in particular - to get broad input and advice on how best to carry out modifications, and build support for the project from potential future users.

But I won't get excited until NSF tells us they are willing to receive a proposal from us. I hope that decision is only a month or two away.

The ship is impressive - after hours of looking only at plans, it was an eye-opener to actually walk the decks and get a direct impression of the amount of new deck space, and new lab space that there will be. Even after she is modified for general oceanographic operations she would be capable of towing four six kilometer long hydrophone streamers and two linear gun arrays - a colossal step beyond EWING's capabilities, and a step that would make 3D seismics a substantially more practical endeavor in academia.

It rains in Norway. It rains in Norway almost all the time, except in Lyngdahl (where the ship is berthed), where it rains ALL the time. But this meteorological inconvenience is more than compensated for by the quality of the fish. The fish in Norway taste very good.    EWING has a port stop in Bergen later this year - perhaps I will have to visit again.

I am off traveling again next week - the very last meeting of the JOIDES (Ocean Drilling Program) ExCom - a committee that has been in existence for decades - it will be a nostalgic moment, spoiled only by the need to also attend a meeting of the JOI Board of Governors, rescued somewhat by the fact that the location is Bermuda. So I shall be able to wear long white socks AND drink warm beer, all at the same time.

Have a great Holiday weekend,

- Mike
