<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Last night at the Palisades Center IMAX about 150 Lamonters attended a screening of "Aliens of the Deep" the new IMAX-3D movie of which our Maya Tolstoy is one of the scientist-stars. Next Tuesday, February 1st, is the next opportunity to see "Aliens" at a special Lamont and Columbia screening at 7:00 pm at the Loews IMAX near Lincoln Center. Maya will be there and will make introductory remarks. Reservations have been piling up quickly, so if you wish to join us contact Sara Kopcsak in the Development Office, kopcsak@ldeo.columbia.edu.

A few of us attended the New York premier of the movie on Tuesday evening, and met with James Cameron, the director, whose interest and expertise in the technology of deep ocean observations is extremely impressive.

On Wednesday afternoon, we held the inaugural meeting of our newly constituted Advisory Board for the Observatory. Larry Lynn, the Mayor of Grand View-on-Hudson is our interim chair of this group, who will focus upon establishing themselves as a substantial and active Board directed at helping us develop new initiatives to increase our visibility and to identify potential sources of new funds.

We had a three-hour-long ExCom meeting this morning. It was a tough meeting - we discussed some of the most fundamental issues related to the sometimes difficult relationships between our faculty and the Doherty research staff (as entities, not as individuals - of course!). Some important draft recommendations came out of that discussion that we will want to share directly with folks over the next week or so - so do not be surprised when you hear that your division is scheduling a special meeting for Nick Christie-Blick, as Chair of DEES, and me to come talk with you. These discussions will be open to all.

Keep warm over the weekend,

– Mike
