<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

For no particularly discernible reason it has been a relatively quiet week - lower than the usual number of crises, no travel out of town, only two trips into Columbia, and lots of sunshine.

We have finalized the outcome of our postdoctoral fellows competition - three offers have been accepted. I will make the names public when the ~~150 decline letters have been sent out. The quality of the applicants this year was outstanding making the decisions extremely difficult.

We have carried out first interviews for another round of candidates for the Assistant Director for Engineering and Facilities position, and I am bound and determined to come to a rapid decision on this so we can establish an effective new leadership team for all our administrative and support services as soon as possible.

Advance warning: on May 6th the Oceanography Building will be closed - really closed - as in folks will not be allowed inside. This is required during the installation of new electrical panels for the building and the hooking up of the new long-awaited diesel backup generator system. Building inhabitants will be given more details closer to the date. Because the work cannot be done safely if it rains, the 'rain date' will be the following Friday May 13th.

This Sunday brings the first in this years series of Public Lectures - 3pm in the Monell Auditorium. Doug Brusa has organized an excellent series of four this spring, beginning with Maya Tolstoy who will be talking about "The Science behind the Aliens of the Deep". I predict that the auditorium will be packed to capacity.
